Latvian Maritime Academy (LMA) was founded on 1 October 1989; it is the first and only marine-oriented institution of the higher education in Latvia. LMA follows marine education traditions since the first Nautical School was opened in Riga in 1789 and closed in 1820. The quality of the accredited maritime studies at LMA is recognised at the national and international levels. LMA graduates have well-paid job offers and there is an increasing demand for maritime professionals both on the Latvian and international markets. Today the academy has more than 800 students, a third of them in part-time study programmes. Every year LMA enrolls around 150 students, most of them study marine navigation and engineering. The programme of Port and Shipping Management is highly popular. It is difficult to obtain a part time job without speaking Latvian. EU students are allowed to work in Latvia without any work permit.
