Abo Akademi University

Åbo Akademi University offers both undergraduate and graduate studies and extensive research opportunities to some 7000 students on three campuses. Our university is located in Åbo (Turku in Finnish), on the south west coast of Finland and in Vasa (Fi. Vaasa). Leading research in many areas, Åbo Akademi University has an acknowledged position at the forefront of research in such areas as biosciences, computer science, democracy, human rights, material sciences, process chemistry and psychology. The present Åbo Akademi University is a medium-size, multidisciplinary and Swedish-language university, celebrating its establishment in 1918. The first Academy in Åbo was founded in 1640. The re-established University was greatly influenced by the model from the Swedish period and its aim was to strengthen Swedish culture in Finland. In 1918, a group of wealthy persons in Åbo and its surroundings donated funds for the establishment of a Swedish university. It was to be a multidisciplinary seat of learning and thus its first professors were humanists, natural scientists and political scientists. You can also look for an apartment on the private market. It should not be too hard to find a suitable place to live neither in Turku or in Vaasa. Both towns are relatively small so the distances are not a problem – you can easily move from one place to another.

To obtain the residence permit, foreign students have to make a bank deposit of at least € 6000 for each year of studying to cover living costs in Finland. ۬Obtaining a part-time job without Finnish language knowledge is difficult.
